About Our Oranization

The Highland Beach Sea Turtle Team was founded in 1989. We are entirely run by a team of 25 local volunteers, each trained to work with these protected species by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). We operate with an FWC permit to monitor, protect nests, and educate the public. Our efforts ultimately support statewide monitoring efforts.

Joanne Ryan is the Permit Holder of the Highland Beach Sea Turtle Team. While she has volunteered with the team since 2010, she has managed the team since approximately 2021, succeeding longtime leader Barbara James. As the primary officer recognized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under permit #100, Joanne oversees the daily operations of the town’s sea turtle program.

She holds a Master’s degree in Biological and Environmental Sciences and has conducted hatchling research and monitoring efforts on both the East and West coasts of Florida. Bri will be aiding in the daily operations of the town's sea turtle program as well as the growth of the program.
